Issue Date: | 2020 | Conference: | CRI 2019 | Abstract: | Prolonged sitting is common in our lives and exist in many settings including the workplace and home. Evidences of prolonged sitting is adversely associated with health outcomes, including type-2 diabetes, premature mortality and cardiovascular risk (Dunstan, Howard, Healy, & Owen, 2012). Prolonged sitting can also be a major cause of back pain, due to the increase stress of the neck, back, arms and legs, thus creating a huge amount of pressure to the back muscles and spinal discs. Sitting in a slouched position can also impact the spinal ligaments by overstretching that eventually strain the spinal discs and cause low-back pain (LBP). LBP is a negative health impact on long-term sickness absence and early retirement (Lötters & Burdorf, 2006). Prolonged sitting could be associated with LBP (Claus, Hides, Moseley, & Hodges, 2008; Makhsous et al., 2009), due to uninterrupted, low-intensity muscle contraction, however, other factors could also be linked to LBP including age, sex, smoking behaviour, occupational lifting, intensity of physical activity and many more (Korshøj et al., 2018) |
